We Fixed Our D-U-N-S Record From China. The Form Hides a Button You Should Not Click.

Every Chinese solo developer hits this wall eventually: Apple and Google Play want a D-U-N-S number for your company, and the official channels are scattered between two providers and one email address that bounces. Here is the path we actually took, with dates.

The short version: a D-U-N-S number is the nine-digit ID that lets a registered company open an Apple Developer or Google Play organization account. For a Chinese company the number is free to look up through Apple’s own form, but fixing a wrong name or address in the record is a separate job. We did both from Huizhou in one week. Three things nobody warned us about: the support email bounces, the Apple form has two submit paths and one of them is wrong, and Apple reads your D&B record only once, the second you register.

Why you need this at all

Apple’s program for companies costs $99 a year and requires a D-U-N-S number to prove your company is real. Google Play’s organization account asks for the same record. As a one-person company in China, that is our only ID card for these stores. No number, no organization account, no family sharing of developer roles, and no payment profile under the company name.

One confusing detail up front: your business license has a Chinese name only. The English name on file is your own translation, and there is no official one until some database repeats it back to you. Which is the problem: the first database that matters is D&B’s.

Step 1: get the number free through Apple

Go to developer.apple.com/support/D-U-N-S/ and use the “look up your organization” link. Sign in with your Apple ID, fill your company’s English name and address, pass a captcha. If D&B finds your company, they give you the number by email within a few days. We got ours this way on day one of the process, without paying anything.

Do not email D&B’s support addresses. We wrote to [email protected] and got a bounce. D&B’s own staff later confirmed: that mailbox is send-only. Profile corrections must go through Apple’s form, which forwards orders to D&B.

Our record came back with a broken English address (a word split in half) and the wrong postcode. This is where the form tricks you.

After filling everything in, there is a big Continue button. Clicking it leads down the wrong path. Below it, in small print, are three lines of text. The third line ends with a quiet “submit your information” link. That is the real door. Small as a footnote, and it is the only one that creates an order.

We submitted on September 24. D&B’s system email arrived the same day with a tracking number, a case number, and a request key. The mail said to wait; a separate closing email would come later. Do not reply to the acceptance mail.

Two more form traps worth knowing:

  • The work email must be on your company domain. Apple rejects QQ, 163, and foxmail addresses. We used [email protected], our own domain, and this cost us nothing but was the one field where a cheap email would have blocked the whole order.
  • The address lines hold about 64 characters each. Ours overflowed. Standard postal abbreviations (10F, BLDG) fit it without hurting the review.

Step 3: the paid mirror, and why we ran both

While the free order was open, we also filed the same correction through Hainan D&B’s self-service portal (dnbportal.cn), the commercial channel D&B runs in China. Phone-number login, company verification, order with a five-business-day promise. We paid nothing extra for the duplicate because the correction content was identical and the risk of the free order dying quietly was worse than the small fee. On September 30 the portal delivered. The number did not change: D&B keeps one code per company, corrected records included.

The free order closed on October 1. Result: “match found, number already exists.” Both channels agreed, and the fixed name and address were visible in the final letter.

The timing trap that matters most

Apple pulls your D&B record as a snapshot the moment you register a developer account, and it never refreshes automatically afterward. If your English name or address is wrong in D&B today, the wrong version gets frozen into your Apple account forever. Google Play reads the same record the same way.

So the rule for anyone following this path: fix the record first, verify it with a fresh lookup, and only then register. We did not register Apple or Google accounts until the corrected record came back confirmed. One week of waiting, zero re-dos.

FAQ

How long does a D-U-N-S number take for a Chinese company? Free lookup through Apple’s form: days. A correction order: one week in our case, both channels agreeing within seven days.

What does it cost? The lookup is free. The Hainan D&B portal sells paid services; we only used it as a second opinion on a correction.

Can I use a personal email? Not on the company fields. The work email must match your company domain.

Does the number change after a correction? No. One company, one number, always.
